Leszek Bzdyl
A dancer, choreographer, director and actor. He graduated in history from the University of Wrocław. In his student years, he got involved in student theatre. In 1987-1990 he collaborated with the Henryk Tomaszewski Mime Theatre. In 1990-1992 he was linked with Wojciech Misiuro’s Gdańsk-based Theatre of Expression. In 1992, together with Katarzyna Chmielewska he founded the Dada von Bzdülöw Theatre. As theatre head, Bzdyl directed and created choreography for most of the performances, for example, Magnolia (2002), Kilka błyskotliwych spostrzeĪeń (A Few Witty Observations, 2004), a performance based on Witold Gombrowicz’s Diaries, Factor T (2008), a show produced in the United States, Le Sacre (2010), and INTRO (2015). He performed with his theatre at numerous festivals and on theatre stages in Poland, as well as more than 20 European countries, China, India, South Korea, the United States, Israel and Palestine.
As the author of stage movement, he has participated in the production of several dozen performances in Warsaw (Narodowy, Rozmaitości, Powszechny, Polski and Studio theatres), Gdynia (Municipal Theatre), Gdańsk (Wybrzeże Theatre), Legnica (Helena Modrzejewska Theatre) and Wrocł aw (Współczesny Theatre). As a play director, he has produced, for example, Cyrano de Bergerac based on Edmond Rostand’s play in Helena Modrzejewska Theatre in Legnica (2009) and Zielone Zoo (A Green Zoo) with an original screenplay in Och-Theatre in Warsaw (2010). In 1997-2000, together with the Dada von Bzdülöw Theatre team, he ran artistic meetings A Day of the Beautiful Society in the Municipal Theatre in Gdynia. He initiated and coordinated the Dance Corporation, an artistic project in the Gdańsk-Sopot-Gdynia Tricity in 2002-2007.).
Bzdyl runs dance and drama workshops in Poland and abroad. Currently he teaches at the Aleksander Zelwerowicz National Academy of Dramatic Art in Warsaw.
As an actor he has performed in a range of plays, such as Shakespeare’s The Tempest directed by Julia Wernio (1999) and Pedro Calderon de la Barca’s Life Is a Dream (2003) in the Municipal Theatre in Gdynia, and in Piotr Cieplak’s Charlie Bokserem (Charlie Becomes a Boxer) in the Wybrzeże Theatre (2010).
Bzdyl has received many awards, including a City of Gdańsk Culture Award (1999), the Theatre Award of the Marshal of the Pomerania Province (2006), Storm of the Year Award from Gazeta Wyborcza readers (2007), and Theatre Pasta International Theatre Award – India (2007). In 2010 he received a Decoration for Merit to Polish Culture.
