The work’s formal explorations of movement are a reference to Erving Goffman’s theory of a network of overt and hidden rules guiding human behaviour in different situations. Face-to-face interaction is a type of show, with interlocutors playing their roles in order to influence the other person. They publicly present only one of their faces, the frontstage, while the backstage is hidden from view. Goffman's façades – appearance, manners – take on different forms, all adjusted to the goal the person wants to achieve in the interaction.
